STUNNER IN THE 'WALES!
If any horse was seeking redemption going into the Canadian Triple Crown, it was Firestorm. The bay three year old ended his two year old season on the upswing, nailing his third HOTY victory in the Louisiana Champions Day Classic Stakes in December Wk 3 and a second place finish in the Blue Mountain Stakes, December Week Four. Things had never looked better. He was a maturing colt, growing into his best form--or so Battle Brook thought. January Year Sixteen started off rocky with one second and two thirds and that was exactly how Firestorm's Year Sixteen continued until July Week Two. A hard-knocking colt, Firestorm struggled to find the winner's circle outside of the Hiolio Derby and Middleground Derby at 8 and 9 furlongs on two different surfaces. There was always some higher caliber horse to steal victory from Firestorm's gaping jaws, a frustration felt by everyone connected to the half-brother of Canadian Triple Crown winner Anodyne.
Against the little doubts in Ripley's mind, she decided to continue on with the colt in the CTC. He'd been the bridesmaid for so long, surely after all of the gut wrenching losses, luck would turn his way. It was not to be in the Queen's Plate--a race BBS won last year with Casualty Of War. Firestorm ran into a buzz saw in Natural Selection who won the first leg impressively and lost second to Valkyrie's Wyvern, a colt that was experiencing a similar season to Firestorm's.
Moving onto the second leg, BBS was cautiously optimistic. The colt had come out of his third place effort quite well and his gallops were stronger than expected. Ripley spoke with Laura after the colt's strongest gallop three days before the race and it was decided he would run against Natural Selection and Tiger Heart. The nine and a half-furlong distance drew everything out of the colt. Under a vigorous ride, Firestorm held off the hard-charging Natural Selection by a mere whisker. Coated in dirt and dripping with sweat, Firestorm was led by to his winner's circle, finally the victor of the fairy tale.
The son of Kyoujin brought his record to 28-8-7-10 with the victory. The connections are still aiming for the final leg of the CTC, the Breeders' Stakes at 12 furlongs. A second place finish in the Tonalist Stakes at Battlestone Downs assures them that the colt can get the distance. The question will be can he get there quicker than the true turf horses.
